Mold Medics Expands Columbus Presence With Six Territories

After selling the home health company he founded, Michael Creatore was ready for a different business opportunity. He found it in Mold Medics, a growing home services franchise focused on mold inspection and remediation.

Creatore first purchased three territories in central Ohio. Not long afterward, he added the other three available territories, giving him the full Columbus market.

It was a quick expansion, but one based on a simple business decision: his advertising was already reaching customers across the wider region.

A New Direction After Years of Entrepreneurship

Creatore has spent much of his career building, advising and selling businesses.

He started in sales, moved into financial planning and later sold his financial services firm. He then founded Specialized Senior Care, where he served as CEO before the company was acquired by a private equity group.

At one point, Creatore considered turning Specialized Senior Care into a franchise. He decided not to pursue it, but his interest in franchising continued.

He later worked as a franchise consultant, advising executives and business owners who wanted to start something of their own. That role allowed him to examine hundreds of franchise companies from an investor’s perspective.

When it was time to choose an opportunity for himself, Creatore knew what he wanted. The business needed to be specialized, relatively straightforward and supported by an organization capable of growing with its franchisees.

Keeping the Business Focused

Mold Medics stood out because it does not try to be a complete property restoration company.

Large restoration businesses may handle water damage, construction, drywall, electrical repairs and several other services. Mold Medics remains focused on mold and indoor air quality.

Creatore liked the idea of developing a team of trained technicians who could become experts in a specific service. A focused operation can make employee training, marketing and customer communication easier to manage.

The company was founded in 2019 and began franchising in 2020. It has grown to 30 territories with seven franchise owners.

That makes Mold Medics a relatively young franchise system. For Creatore, the early stage represented an opportunity to enter the brand while it was still building its national footprint.

Why He Purchased Three More Territories

Creatore’s original agreement included three territories in the Columbus area. He also received the first right to acquire the three remaining central Ohio territories.

The benefits of owning the full market became clear after he started digital advertising.

People do not always recognize franchise boundaries when searching for a local service. A homeowner may live a few streets outside an operator’s territory while still being part of the same media market and metropolitan area.

Creatore saw that some of the money he spent promoting the business could generate leads in neighbouring territories. By purchasing the remaining areas, he could serve those customers instead of losing potential business beyond his original borders.

The six-territory agreement gives him a larger customer base and more freedom to promote Mold Medics across Columbus as one regional brand.

Helping Customers Understand Mold Problems

The company’s inspection and testing process also influenced Creatore’s choice.

Some mold removal providers concentrate on spraying or treating an affected area without clearly identifying what is present. Mold Medics takes a more informative approach by helping property owners understand the mold issue before moving ahead with the service.

That matters because customers are often unsure about what they are seeing in their homes. Testing can provide more information about the mold and help guide the next steps.

Creatore believes educating the customer is an important part of delivering good service. It creates transparency and helps homeowners feel more comfortable with the work being recommended.

He has followed a similar philosophy throughout his business career. His companies have maintained an A-plus Better Business Bureau rating, and he wanted to invest in a franchise that took its reputation seriously.

Ohio Becomes a Larger Market for Mold Medics

Creatore’s agreement gives Mold Medics a much stronger position in Ohio.

The franchise already had a presence in Toledo, but the addition of six central Ohio territories introduces the brand across the Columbus area. Mold Medics has also expanded into Pennsylvania, Michigan, California and Florida.

Brand leader Bryan McMurray expects 25 to 30 additional territories to join the development pipeline before the end of the year.

He believes Creatore’s business background makes him a valuable addition to the system. Creatore understands how franchises are structured and is willing to share detailed feedback with the leadership team.

For a newer franchise, owners with that level of experience can help improve the business model as it grows.

Mold Services Have Demand Across the Country

Mold problems can develop in nearly any climate, although the causes may differ by location.

South Florida is a major growth target for Mold Medics because of its humidity, heavy rain and exposure to hurricanes. Water intrusion following a storm can create serious problems for homes and commercial properties.

Entering hurricane-prone states can be more complicated because of licensing regulations, but the potential demand remains significant.

Ohio, Pennsylvania and other northern markets also have many opportunities. Older houses, basements, leaking pipes and limited ventilation can create conditions that allow mold to develop.

This means the company does not have to depend entirely on disaster-related work. Everyday property issues can generate demand throughout the year.

Support From Threshold Brands

Mold Medics operates under Threshold Brands, which owns a collection of home service franchise companies. Its portfolio includes USA Insulation, Pestmaster and Sir Grout.

Creatore viewed the relationship with Threshold Brands as a major advantage. A parent company with established resources can invest in systems, marketing and franchisee support while Mold Medics continues to expand.

He also liked the shared financial interest between the franchisor and its owners. If franchisees build successful local businesses, the entire system becomes stronger.

The initial investment for a Mold Medics franchise is estimated between $141,250 – $250,000.

As more territories open, McMurray believes the company must continue adding coaches, marketing professionals and other support staff. Expanding the franchise network without increasing support could make it harder for owners to grow successfully.

For Creatore, buying all six Columbus territories provides the space to build a meaningful regional operation. His next challenge will be turning that territory coverage into a trusted and recognizable home service brand across central Ohio.
