Largest Hardee’s Operator Expands Into Coffee

Boddie-Noell Enterprises Signs Major Multi-Unit Franchise Agreement

Boddie-Noell Enterprises, widely recognized as the largest Hardee’s franchisee in the country, is entering the coffee franchise industry through a major partnership with Scooter’s Coffee. The company plans to develop at least 31 new drive-thru coffee locations across North Carolina and Virginia as part of its newest expansion strategy.

The restaurant group currently operates more than 330 Hardee’s units and has spent decades building one of the strongest multi-unit restaurant operations in the industry. The new agreement now positions Boddie-Noell as the largest Scooter’s Coffee franchisee in both North Carolina and Virginia.

The move is especially significant for Virginia, where Scooter’s Coffee has not yet opened any operational locations, giving Boddie-Noell the opportunity to help establish the brand’s presence from the ground up.

Shared Values Drove the Franchise Partnership

Executives from both companies say the partnership developed because of strong alignment in culture, operations and community involvement.

Scooter’s Coffee has built its franchise expansion strategy around suburban and smaller-town markets rather than aggressively pursuing major metropolitan cities. That approach strongly appealed to Boddie-Noell Enterprises, which has historically operated in similar community-focused environments.

Leadership from Boddie-Noell explained that the company prefers markets where long-term customer relationships and local trust still play an important role in business success.

Scooter’s Coffee executives echoed those views, noting that local engagement remains one of the company’s biggest competitive advantages in the crowded coffee franchise market.

Scooter’s Coffee Growth Continues Accelerating Nationwide

The drive-thru coffee franchise has rapidly expanded throughout the United States and now operates approximately 920 locations. Company leadership expects the system to exceed 1,000 stores before the end of 2026.

Scooter’s Coffee offers a menu featuring specialty coffee drinks, iced beverages, smoothies, teas and quick food options designed around convenience and speed.

Despite the brand’s rapid growth, company leadership says it remains selective when awarding franchise territories. Scooter’s Coffee reportedly prioritizes franchise operators who actively contribute to their local communities through sponsorships, events and neighborhood partnerships.

According to company executives, customer loyalty in the beverage sector often depends less on the products themselves and more on the guest experience and local familiarity customers build with employees and franchise owners.

Large-Scale Operations With Local Market Focus

Scooter’s Coffee leadership believes Boddie-Noell Enterprises successfully combines large-scale operational expertise with strong community involvement, something many growing franchise groups struggle to maintain.

Executives from both companies reportedly spent years discussing a potential partnership before finalizing the development agreement. Throughout those conversations, cultural fit and operational philosophy remained key evaluation factors.

Scooter’s Coffee leadership stated that trust, integrity, humility and long-term relationship building were essential components in determining whether the companies were aligned for future growth.

Diversification Returns for Boddie-Noell Enterprises

Although Hardee’s remains the company’s largest and most recognizable brand partnership, Boddie-Noell has operated several other restaurant concepts over the years. Past investments included Texas Steakhouse & Saloon, Moe’s Southwest Grill and additional barbecue-focused restaurant businesses.

The company reduced its diversification efforts during the recession of the early 2000s in order to focus more heavily on strengthening its Hardee’s operations. Over the past few years, however, leadership resumed evaluating franchise opportunities that could complement its existing infrastructure and operational strengths.

After reviewing multiple restaurant and beverage concepts, Scooter’s Coffee emerged as the strongest match.

Executives also indicated that at least one of the planned Scooter’s Coffee stores could potentially be developed on property already owned near an existing Hardee’s location, creating operational and real estate advantages for the company.

Drive-Thru Beverage Franchises Gain Momentum

The partnership between Boddie-Noell Enterprises and Scooter’s Coffee reflects the growing popularity of drive-thru beverage franchises among experienced restaurant operators.

As consumer demand for convenience-driven concepts continues increasing, coffee franchises with strong customer loyalty and scalable operations are becoming highly attractive expansion opportunities for multi-unit franchise groups.

For Boddie-Noell, the agreement represents a strategic entry into a fast-growing category while continuing to operate with the community-focused values that have shaped the company’s success for more than 60 years.
