The medical spa industry looks very different from the way it did a decade ago. Customers now expect professional treatments, modern technology and an experience that feels closer to a luxury wellness retreat than a traditional clinic.
Vio Med Spa is responding with a redesigned location that combines a more welcoming atmosphere with a simpler operating model for franchise owners.
The first studio built around the new concept recently opened in Zionsville, Indiana. Future locations will adopt the same general format, while existing franchisees will have options for updating their current spaces.
From Minimal and Clinical to Warm and Comfortable
Vio’s refreshed interiors represent one of the most noticeable changes.
New studios feature softer lighting, wood finishes and reception areas designed to make guests feel relaxed from the moment they arrive. The brand looked to boutique hotels and high-end wellness destinations when developing the new environment.
The company wants to maintain a premium identity without creating a space that feels unapproachable. That balance is important in medical aesthetics, where customers may want the professionalism of a healthcare setting but prefer the comfort and personal attention of a spa.
Vio launched in 2017, and customer preferences have continued to develop since then. The redesigned studio reflects the brand’s growth as well as the changing expectations surrounding beauty and wellness services.
Smaller Studios Create More Flexibility
The new prototype is not just about appearance. Vio has also reduced the amount of space required for a typical location.
Older studios generally ranged from 2,000 to 2,500 square feet and offered seven to nine treatment rooms. The updated model calls for approximately 1,500 to 2,000 square feet and five to seven rooms.
The company has redesigned storage, treatment areas and staff pathways to make the reduced space function efficiently. This may help franchisees consider properties that would not have accommodated the previous model.
A smaller format can also make it easier to adapt the brand to different cities and real estate environments. Instead of depending on one exact building type, Vio can adjust the prototype while maintaining a recognizable experience from one market to another.
Franchisees Can Add Technology as Demand Develops
Advanced equipment is essential to many medical spa services, but purchasing too many devices before a location has established regular customers can place pressure on its opening budget.
Vio is addressing that issue by dividing equipment purchases into phases.
New franchisees will begin with the technology required to provide the company’s main services. Additional devices may be introduced after the studio reaches specific membership targets, generally around 300 or 500 members.
Some aesthetics devices can cost upwards of $50,000. Waiting until a location has built a reliable membership base gives the franchisee a clearer path toward recovering that investment.
It also gives employees time to master the initial menu of treatments. When another service is introduced, the team is better prepared to explain it, promote it and provide it effectively.
For customers, gradual expansion means the studio can continue adding new experiences instead of launching its complete service selection at once.
Opening Inventory Will Be More Carefully Managed
Vio has also reduced the number of supplies a franchisee must purchase before opening.
The old system required enough inventory for several months. However, the company found that essential products could often be delivered within a day or two, making such a large opening order unnecessary.
New locations will carry a more carefully selected supply of products for their first two to four weeks. Operators can then use actual purchasing and treatment activity to determine which items should be reordered most frequently.
This approach helps avoid crowded storage areas and reduces the amount of capital sitting in unused inventory. Vio estimates that the change will cut initial inventory needs by about one-third.
Previously reported opening inventory costs ranged from $30,000 to $44,300. The purchasing program has been restructured with the support of Medvelle, an inventory management provider.
A Franchise System Positioned for Its Next Stage
Vio began franchising in 2018, one year after the business was founded. It has expanded to 67 locations in 20 states and provides injectables, facials, medical aesthetics procedures and wellness services.
The brand received backing from Freeman Spogli in 2024.
The total estimated investment for a Vio Med Spa franchise ranges from $642,722 to $1,109,954. Furniture, fixtures and equipment expenses fall between an estimated $293,246 and $432,001.
Vio developed its new model with input from franchise owners, including members of its franchise advisory council. That involvement helped the company consider how design decisions would affect construction, staffing, storage, treatment delivery and long-term performance.
New studios will follow the refreshed format, while retrofit packages will allow established locations to adopt selected elements without completing an entire rebuild.
Vio’s strategy shows how franchise brands can modernize without focusing only on surface-level design. The company is updating the customer experience while also reconsidering how much space, inventory and equipment an operator truly needs in the early stages.
As Vio expands into more markets, that combination of comfort, flexibility and controlled investment could become an important part of its franchise growth story.
